Mastering The Art of Influence video series: Active Listening
Do you want the leaders in your organization to develop their leadership skills and become more influential leaders? Then watch the Mastering the Art on Influence on Active Listening.
Active listening is another essential component of influential leadership. Leaders who actively listen are better equipped to connect with and understand their team members, build stronger relationships, and effectively navigate challenging situations.
How to recognize if a leader lacks active listening skills?
Signs that a leader may lack active listening skills might be by demonstrating some of the following behaviours: interrupting others, not maintaining eye contact, being distracted during conversations, being dismissive of others’ ideas, failing to ask clarifying questions, and providing immediate solutions without fully understanding the issue at hand.
Have you observed those behaviours in some people you work with or perhaps in yourselves? We all show some or all of those behaviours at the time; some show them more consistently.
Next, I would like to briefly look at what are the impacts on teams when their leaders lack active listening
The impacts on the team when a leader lacks active listening skills might include low morale, poor communication, decreased collaboration and teamwork, and potentially increased stress and conflict, which often leads to decreased motivation and productivity and, ultimately, a higher staff turnover rate.
Active listening is like playing music in a band. Each band member needs to listen to each other so they can play in harmony and all feel the groove and the rhythm of the music.
Now let’s share five tips that, when applied, will demonstrate better active listening ;
Firstly. Give your full attention: Focus on the person speaking by maintaining eye contact, avoiding distractions, and being present.
Secondly, don’t interrupt: Wait for the other person to finish speaking before responding. Avoid interrupting or finishing their sentences.
Thirdly. Clarify your understanding: Paraphrase the speaker’s words to ensure you understand correctly. Ask questions when necessary to clarify any confusion.
Forthly. Show empathy: Show that you understand and respect the speaker’s perspective by acknowledging their emotions and providing a supportive environment.
Lastly, summarize and provide feedback: Summarize your understanding of what the speaker said and give feedback to show that you are engaged in the conversation. This demonstrates that you understand and value their perspective.
Following these five tips and being intentional and focused on active listening, your organization’s leaders will better understand the perspectives and needs of their team members, foster trust and respect in their relationships, and improve communication and collaboration within the organization.
